An expert discussion on “Modern Therapy in the Fight Against Diabetes: Innovations to Improve Quality of Life” will take place on the side-lines of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum as part of the Healthy Life Area business programme. The Area is being organized by the Roscongress Foundation Healthy Life project, and the Area’s Intellectual Partner is the Content Foundation for the Development of Expert and Analytical Activities.

The alarming rate at which diabetes is spreading and the great risk of complications that lead to disability and premature mortality require that the state takes serious measures. It is of vital importance that patients be ensured the availability of innovative therapy. At present, innovative hypoglycaemic drugs and combined drugs are bringing about the same revolution in the treatment of type 2 diabetes that insulin did a century ago.

“To effectively treat chronic diseases such as diabetes there must be a large number of specialists organized into one team and united by a common philosophy, a common approach, using the most effective technologies and acting together with the patient based on common goals and objectives,” Russian Medical Academy of Continuing Professional Education Department of Endocrinology Head Alexander Ametov said.

The issue of technological development, the support and stimulation of scientific and clinical research, and the inclusion of new therapy regimens in clinical guidelines and increasing the availability of modern drugs is very important and requires federal support. The possibility of ensuring quick access to innovative methods of treatment depends on financing drug provision, expanding preferential lists, and creating patient registries among other things. Ultimately, such measures should merge innovative drug usage with the principles of an individual approach to each patient with diabetes.

Session participants will discuss what measures must be taken so that the necessary quantities of innovative drugs for the treatment of diabetes are produced in Russia, what needs to be done to provide patients with access to modern drugs produced internationally, what mechanisms and regulatory initiatives can stimulate the pharmaceutical industry to manufacture innovative drugs.
