Discussion on Special Approaches to Fighting Cancer Held in Moscow

30 October 2019

A roundtable on ‘Taking a Special Approach to the Fight Against Cancer: Lung Cancer’, organized by the Roscongress Foundation and the Content Foundation for the Development of Expert and Analytical Activity with the support of the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University, took place in Moscow. Participants in the discussion included Director of the National Medical Research Radiological Centre of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation and Chief Oncologist of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation Andrey Kaprin, Head of the Department of Epidemiology and Evidence-Based Medicine of the Sechenov First Moscow State Medical University of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation Nikolay Briko, Chief Freelance Diagnostic Specialist of Moscow Healthcare Department and Chief Executive Officer of the Scientific and Practical Clinical Centre for Diagnostics and Telemedicine Technologies of Moscow Healthcare Department Sergey Morozov, and First Deputy CEO for Development of the Roscongress Foundation and head of the Healthy Life project Anastasia Stolkova.

The roundtable was a continuation of an event cycle devoted to improving efficiency in the implementation of the ‘Fight against cancer’ federal project. The first discussion took place as part of the business programme of the Healthy Life project, which was presented at the 3rd Russian Public Health Forum, organized by the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation. A cooperation agreement between the Content Foundation for the Development of Expert and Analytical Activity and the Association of Russian Oncologists national union was signed in September 2019 at the second FOR LIFE International Forum of Oncology and Radiology. The two sides agreed to collaborate on expert and analytical work, to hold expert meetings with the aim of developing proposals for implementing public cancer care programmes, and to organize joint events, including with international participants.

“Best practices from a number of foreign countries show that taking into account variations in prevalence and mortality rates between the various types of cancer and highlighting specific indicators and sub-programmes can significantly improve the efficiency of federal and national projects and increase life expectancy. Lung cancer is the most widespread and lethal of all cancers. The significant advances that have been made in treating this cancer have still not been able to reduce its heavy burden, counteract its increased prevalence, or curtail the constant need for new curative and preventive methods. As part of today’s discussion, we looked at what additional target indicators can be introduced to implement the ‘Fight against cancer’ federal project more efficiently, which best practices are available for diagnosing and treating cancer patients around the world, and how to incorporate them into the existing federal project,” said Anastasia Stolkova, First Deputy CEO for Development at the Roscongress Foundation and head of the Healthy Life project.

Over 50,000 people die from lung cancer each year in Russia, which is the equivalent of 136 deaths every day. The main factors underpinning the weakness of the fight against this disease include late diagnosis, low levels of accessibility to innovative treatments and modern drugs, and a relatively soft anti-tobacco policy.
